On May 5, 2007 the weather for this particular Die Hard Double Century from Borrego Springs to Oceanside and back, was extremely pleasant throughout the entire ride!!!!
Kermit came out to sag, along with two Sisters, Angie & Patty. The cyclists testing this route were Tony Martinez, Dan Crain & I.
We parked at Christmas Tree Circle; the ride start/finish. The stars were out to greet us by the billions.
Sometime, in the middle of the night, the wind kicked up and grew into a huge storm that was so strong it was tipping & pushing both heavy duty vehicles around, and was howling loudly. We all thought wow, if this keeps up tomorrow, there's no way this would be safe to ride in! Then something very remarkable happened, the wind died down completely, as if nothing ever happened. We got up with Borrego so peaceful and tranquil, our feet crunching in the sound seemed to carry an echo!
We began our journey up Montezuma grade in the dark, with first light just around the corner, followed by a spectacular sunrise. The air was cool, with no wind at all. As the sun continued to rise, a gentle cool breeze came along behind us.
The rest of the day was cool, not too hot, and not too cool. The breezes stayed in our favor throughout the entire day, and on into the evening. This was one of those extremely rare days when there was a constant tail wind, no matter which way we were going. Wow, I wished I could say it would always be this exceptionally pleasant! Coming into Borrego in the evening was cool, the stars came out to greet us by the billions, with the moon over a mountain silhouette beaconing us on in.
Die Hard Double Century on this day was exceptionally successful. I was living in and through my own dream. A dream I had been dreaming since 1997. A dream come true. This dream went beyond anything I had dreamed it would be. Anny
